Round 1 of the ABBC quiz is completed online by students at their schools.
The online Quiz may be sat anytime from 8.00 am - 5.00pm (in your state or region) Monday 15 March - Friday 19 March inclusive provided it is held as a closed book exam, under strict examination conditions, supervised by the teacher.
Teachers may have different groups of students sit at different times provided the above described exam conditions are met. A student will only be able to login once.
PREPARATION FOR THE DAY/s OF THE QUIZ
Teachers will need to have with them in the Quiz examination room:
1) Registration Details Printout issued to teachers at registration - this has Teacher Password (keep strictly confidential), Student ID numbers and Quiz Password on it. We suggest you should have prepared slips to handout to each student as they enter the examination room from the list on the Registration Details printout, by cutting along the dotted line; and collect these when they finish the Quiz to keep this information confidential.
MISSING your Registration Details Printout/Student IDs and Quiz Password/Teacher Password? Email us here.
PROCEDURE ON THE DAY OF THE QUIZ
- On entering the Quiz Room each student should be issued with their unique Student ID and Quiz Password slip (cut up the list of Student IDs/Quiz Passwords on your registration sheet to handout to each student when they enter the examination room - please collect these when they exit the room to keep them confidential).
- When students are seated to commence the Quiz students bring up the ABBC (http://abbc.edu.au) web site and click on the link:
Or students can go directly to the quiz URL which is:
https://www.abbc.edu.au/quiz.php
- Students enter their Name carefully (spelling and format must be correct - the first letter of their Christian name and Surname must be a capital letter (eg John Smith) - this is how it will be automatically displayed on their ABBC Participant Certificate which will be emailed to them.
Once the details have been correctly entered, the system generates a random set of questions for the student. The timer has not yet started for the student's Quiz. The student should check at this point that they are registered to the correct school and teacher. If there is an issue with the registration please email ABBC technical support as soon as possible.
Once they click the "Start" button the timer will begin and they have 40 minutes to complete their test (total of 1 minute per question and 5 minutes at the end for checking).
- The Quiz will present them with 35 multiple choice questions. The student should make their selection and then click on the "Click here to enter your choice" button. At the top right corner of the page is an information panel showing the question the student is on and how many minutes they have left.
Please note that students are not required to put in an answer and will be able to return at the end to missing answers if time permits. There are no penalties for incorrect answers so encourage your students to guess if they're not sure!
- The quiz remains open for the student for 40 minutes from the moment they pressed the "Start" button. If they get to the end of the questions and have time left the following screen will display:

The student can now select to go over their questions or finish the Quiz.
- If the student decides to look over their questions at the end they can click on the link above and the following screen will appear, outlining all of the questions in their test and the answers this student has selected:

The student can click on a question to change the answer they have put in or to put an answer in should they have omitted a question.
- Once the student is happy with their answers they can click on the "click here" link and the quiz will be finalised and the following screen will appear:

The ABBC Round 1 Quiz for this student is now complete.
Problems while quiz in progress?
We understand there can be technical problems and students may be disconnected during their session. The system will show us if this was a deliberate or system disconnect – students are not permitted to abort their session, they must answer every question to finalise their session. If the session spontaneously disconnects, teachers may go to http://abbc.edu.au/quiz_reset_student.php and login using the Student ID, Quiz Password, and your Teacher Password to reset the students ID. (Lost your teacher password? or if you have other problems while the Quiz is in progress please email ABBC Helpdesk .)
On completion of the Quiz
Each student becomes an ABBC Alumni on completing the Quiz (if they do not want to be part of the ABBC Alumni they may opt out). The ABBC has planned activities to keep in touch with all ABBC Alumni, linking students with the scientific communities and the universities of each state of Australia and New Zealand who are associated with the ABBC - see our contact pages. Scientists in these institutions are involved in the ABBC to stimulate, encourage and support students' interest in science, and in neuroscience in particular, and to pass onto the next generation their enthusiasm for the exciting, dynamic and rewarding frontier of scientific discovery - see: our contact pages
Students will receive through their teacher, an ABBC 2010 Participation Certificate which has the student's name and school automatically entered from the Quiz login details students type in when they logon to the Quiz.
Teachers will be able to access their students' Certificates soon after the completion of the online Quiz by going to the link that will be at www.abbc.edu.au (from 15 March) and logging in using their teacher email and the Teacher Password. Teachers can then save them as a PDF document and/or print them out on a colour printer (or black and white printer if colour is not possible). Many schools present these Certificates to students at School Assembly.
Individual student scores or school rankings will not be made available to teachers, schools or to any other organisation.
Teachers will be advised by email in April/May which of their students are invited to compete in the Round 2 State Final Challenge as an individual competitor in the Individual Challenge; and whether their school qualified to field a team in the Team Challenge and if so, which students may be selected to be part of the team.
Good luck to everyone !
