Round one is open to all students who will be in year 10 (within Australia) and year 11 (with in New Zealand), in 2010. See our terms and conditions for further information on eligibility.
Under exam conditions, students will take the online Round 1 - Australian Brain Bee Challenge Quiz at their school during Brain Awareness Week 15 March - Friday 19 March 2010. There is no cost to enter. Teachers should consider registering their whole year 10 class.
The online quiz consists of 35 multiple-choice questions. Questions will be derived from the booklet, "Neuroscience - Science of the Brain" by the British Neuroscience Society and the Dana Alliance. The book can be downloaded here for no cost. It is available in multiple languages - note all rounds of the ABBC competition will be conducted in English however. Hard copies of the booklet are available for purchase from the British Neuroscience Association at the following website http://www.bna.org.uk/publications/.
After registration, teachers will be given a list of passwords for their students (equivalent to the number of students they nominate that will be taking the quiz), as well as a password for themselves. The round one test is a "closed book" test and should be conducted under usual examination conditions.
As this is an online quiz, each student will require a computer and access to the internet to take the quiz. It is anticipated that not all students in a single school will take the quiz simultaneously due to limitations on computer resources. Therefore it is permissible for students to sit the quiz at different times of the day but must be under the supervision of a teacher. As questions will be drawn randomly from a larger bank of questions, no two tests will be identical in content (but will be similar in degree of difficulty).
Please contact the organisers (email: abbc@uq.edu.au) if you are a teacher that does not have sufficient computer resources or internet access to arrange an alternative way for your students to participate in round one.
